For anyone who is trying to use matte photo paper for printing their pictures they have probably been pretty disappointed. The reality is that matte paper is not designed to be used for the pictures you take on your digital camera and want to print out. In that situation you would be much better to go with a high gloss photo paper, so that you can really capture the image perfectly and have a good enough print to hang on the wall.

Matte photo paper is really designed to best display text this means if you were printing out a book or a thesis paper, then you would get the most benefit out of using matte paper. The reason it is so good for text and things that need to be read in general is that it is much less glossy and shiny than typical photo paper. This reduces the glare and makes it much easier for the average person to read what is on the print out.

Another option to choose would be a semi-matte photo paper, which could be the best of both worlds if you want only have to use one style paper. Semi matte is also referred to as silk paper and it can be used for both photo printing as well as printing out text documents. While it will never be as good on photos as glossy or text as full matte is, semi matte printing paper is a great in between choice.
